CAIRNS SMOKE ALARMS

To be compliant with Queensland Legislation, your Cairns smoke alarms must be photoelectric. Photoelectric alarms are able to distinguish between cooking smoke and fire smoke, producing less false alarms.

MUST HAVE RELIABLE POWER SUPPLY

Your Cairns smoke alarms must be either hardwired into your property – our team can help – or be powered by a 10 year non-removable battery. Again, Huzgroup Electrical can assist with this, using leading brands and alarms.

NEED TO BE INTERCONNECTED

For maximum efficiency at providing alerts regarding the presence of smoke and fire, your Cairns smoke alarms must be interconnected. This means if one alarm is triggered in one room of your property, the rest of the alarms will also trigger.

MUST COMPLY WITH THE STANDARDS

Queensland Legislation requires your Cairns smoke alarms be compliant with Australian Standard AS 3786-2014. How will you know if this is the case? It will be marked on the body of the smoke alarm unit itself.

WHAT ARE THE REQUIREMENTS? CAIRNS SMOKE ALARMS

All Queenslander’s have a responsibility regarding smoke alarms and everyone’s role is a little different. For owner / occupiers of private homes, townhouses or units – you are required to have interconnected photoelectric Cairns smoke alarms in place by 1 January 2027. If you are conducting a new build or major renovation, then the current requirements need to be implemented as a part of that project. If you are selling your property, then you must first ensure it meets current Queensland Legislation regarding smoke alarms. Cairns, do not get caught out.

For landlords of Cairns rental properties, you should already have ticked this box – it was a legal requirement that rental dwellings meet current Queensland Legislation requirements before 1 January 2022. For tenants of said properties, it’s your responsibility to test and clean your Cairns smoke alarms at least once every year.

WHERE SHOULD THEY BE LOCATED CAIRNS SMOKE ALARMS

Under Queensland Legislation, and where practicable, smoke alarms must be installed on the ceiling. Your Cairns smoke alarms must not be placed within 300mm of a ceiling corner or light fitting, or within 400mm of air conditioning vents or ceilings fans. More than that, Cairns smoke alarms should be positioned in locations that maximise their operational effectiveness at detecting the presence of smoke and/or fire.

Cairns smoke alarms must be installed on each storey of a multi-storey dwelling, in each bedroom, and in hallways that connect living areas of the property. Once installed by Huzgroup Electrical, you will need to conduct maintenance on your Cairns smoke alarms, to ensure operational readiness. This can be as easy as dusting them or vacuuming them. If you have a caravan or motorhome, then you should have at least one photoelectric Cairns smoke alarm installed on the ceiling, from 1 July 2024.
